John F. Wernert

John Francis Wernert died December 20, 2016 at the age of 95 in Toledo, Ohio. He was the second born of three children who came from “good German stock”, on July 2, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph A and Margrette (“Margaret” G Mersing) Wernert. John loved the Maumee River and spent many hours on his iceboat as a young man. John graduated from Libby High School in 1939, where he competed as a cross country runner. He never lost his love for his alma mater. After John retired he took up running once again. He was a member of the Roadrunner Club, participated in races and marathons, winning countless trophies and medals. He ran well into his 80’s. John’s daily running route was on River Road through Side Cut Park, into Maumee. He was a well-known personality in that area having run this route for years. John was a member, and actively involved, in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He volunteered for St Vincent de Paul and Little Sisters of the Poor. John married Gracemary A (Brucker) September 3, 1949 at Rosary Cathedral, Toledo. Gracemary preceded him in death December 17, 2001. John is survived by his seven children; Peter J (Mary Kay Toth), North Fort Myers FL; David W (Maureen Turi), Portland OR; Joseph E (Kathleen A Williams, deceased) Toledo; Helen M (Douglas E) Dawson, Ida, MI; Barbara A Wernert (David G Cook), Toledo; Susan M (William M) Wagner, Lambertville, MI; Matthew R (Dee A Rahm), Springhill, Fla., and, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Sisters, Margaret Jeanne “Jean” Keller and Georgeanna M Wernert preceded him in death. He is also survived by his dear friends Norm and Dorothy Heydinger. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday December 27th.at 10:30 am.in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church where the family will receive visitors beginning at 9:30am. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Astor House and Spring Meadows for their care and friendship. And a special thanks to Bill O’Connell for being a good friend and roommate.
