Norman C. Hurlburt

Norman Hurlburt, age 100, died peacefully on Oct. 15 2023 surrounded by his loving children. A devoted husband, caring father, and faithful friend to many, Norman will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Norman was born March 22, 1923 to parents Gertrude and John Hurlburt who raised him and his three sisters in their South Toledo home. Shortly after graduation from Libbey High School, Norman was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. He served mainly stateside in Fort Dix New Jersey before returning to Toledo when the war ended. In 1950 he joined the Toledo Fire Department, becoming a second-generation Toledo Firefighter. Throughout his 34-year career he worked at several stations and many times answered the call including during the Tiedtke's department store fire in May 1975. On a cold January day in 1953 he married the love of his life Frances Novak and together they raised their five children; Susan, John, David, Kathy, and Nancy in their South Toledo home. Health and fitness was a philosophy he continuously maintained and Norman spent countless hours jogging, walking, swimming, and cycling throughout his life. Age was never a barrier to anything he felt passionate about, especially when it came to riding his bicycle on the trail near his home in Monclova Township, something he did frequently until just months ago. He loved to fish and filled many coolers with walleye and perch from Lake Erie, even dropping his lines though the thick ice. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling in his retirement, including trips to Europe. Norman was preceded in death by his wife Frances, and his three sisters. He is survived by his five children, Susan (Mike) Smith, John Hulburt, David Hulburt, Kathy (Kyle) Comley, Nancy (Jim) Gagnet, and six grandchildren. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Wednesday, October 18 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. A last alarm service will be held at 6:30, followed by a Scripture Service at 7:00. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee, Ohio. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery with military honors.
