Colleen Spangler

Colleen Ann Callahan-Blass-Spangler passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 4, 2023. Colleen was born on August 14, 1938 to Irvin and Eileen (Carey) Callahan in Toledo, OH. She attended Central Catholic High School. She was married to Richard Blass for 19 years and he precedes her in death. While raising their children on the East Side of Toledo, she was the neighborhood mom making lasting friendships with the Valleywood Crew. She married Joseph Spangler in 1976. They moved to Arcadia, Florida in 1989 and together they built the home of their dreams. While in Toledo, Colleen was very proud to work with the Democratic Party. When she moved to Arcadia, she was very active in the community. She was the Executive Director of Main Street, proud of the work she accomplished revitalizing Downtown Arcadia. She worked at Arcadia Oaks Assisted Living Facility and the Suncoast Blood Bank. Colleen was also very active in the Democratic party in DeSoto County and was part of the Gore/Bush election recount. She received Florida Democrat of the Year as well as many other awards during her time in Arcadia, including Distinguished Service Award which was presented to her by Sheriff Potter from Desoto County Sheriff's Department. She enjoyed reading and crafting. She was a devout Catholic and active in St. Paul's Catholic Church in Arcadia, serving as a Eucharistic Minister. Colleen is survived by her children, Edie (Mike) Hagan, Vicki (Jay) Schramm, Tracy (Denise) Spangler, all from Toledo, Ricky (Claire) Blass of Daytona Beach, FL and foster son, Bruce (Tonya) Brown of Hillsdale, MI; grandchildren Melissa (Dennis) Stacey-Dell, Andrea (Charles) Oakes, Matt (Mindy) Liming, Lisa Stacey, Valerie (Adam) Holguin, Angie Spangler, Randi Spangler, Alan Stacey, Josh (Liz) Spangler, Jaime Spangler, and Michael (Mandy) Hogan as well as 28 great-grandchildren and special friends Pat Kuhn and Isabel Gutierrez and her family. She is preceded in death by both parents, brother Patrick Callahan, both husbands, sons Scott and Terry Spangler and one of her best friends, Wendy Wendlandt. The next time someone sneezes, smile and share Colleen's favorite saying, "Bless your little heart and tater hoe". Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home on Friday, June 9 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will begin at Coyle on Saturday, June 10 at 10:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
