Daniel Joseph DiSalle

Daniel Joseph Di Salle, Sr. passed away peacefully on April 2nd at Hospice of NW Ohio. He fought a courageous twelve month battle with pancreatic cancer. Dan was born on January 11th 1935 as the eldest of three boys to Joseph & Helen DiSalle. He was a 1952 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a 1956 graduate of Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics. He was a proud alumnus of both institutions & was generous to both schools throughout his life. An Army veteran, Dan reported to Ft. Chaffee Arkansas to serve his country during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Before getting into real estate, his early career included General Tire in Akron and the DiSalle Plating & Die Casting Co. in Toledo which was founded by his grandfather, Anthony C. DiSalle. Dan obtained his real estate license in 1969 and joined the former Hennessey Realty Co. which he later purchased in 1971, ultimately changing the name to The DiSalle Real Estate Co. in 1972 after buying out his partner, Bob Hennessey. The firm flourished under his leadership and still operates today with twelve offices serving NW Ohio & SE Michigan. In 1980, Dan founded The DiSalle Securities & Mortgage Co. which formed commercial real estate syndications throughout the region. True to his Catholic faith, Dan was generous with his time, talent, and treasure giving back to the community he loved in many ways. He was the former Board Chairman for St. Luke’s Hospital and served as Chairman for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Oregon, leading a campaign to rebuild the facility. Dan also served the YMCA of Greater Toledo as a member of the Board of Trustees and was a recipient of the “Trustee for Life” award. Through the YMCA, he supported the Splash program which helped to teach thousands of children to swim. He was a former Board Chairman of St. Francis de Sales High School. During his involvement at St. Francis, he was Chairman of the “Silver Knight” Campaign Drive which renovated the swimming pool & weight room at the school. He was inducted into the St. Francis de Sales High School Hall of Fame in 2001. He founded the DiSalle/Hospice Golf Outing which has supported NW Ohio Hospice since 1993. In addition, he supported the Franciscan Center, St. Ursula Academy, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Maumee, and Central City Ministries, among many others. Dan was also inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. Dan married the love of his life, Mary Wenzler, on September 15, 1960 at Rosary Cathedral, celebrating 53 years together this past fall. Together they raised seven children and could often be found poolside at swimming meets throughout the city, state, and nation. An avid swimmer himself, Dan swam nearly every day until the age of 78. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren and was proud of their swimming and other accomplishments. Dan and Mary enjoyed traveling the world together, boating, and celebrating with family and friends. They were longtime members of the Toledo Club, Toledo Country Club, Laurel Hill Swim and Tennis Club where they formed lasting friendships. Additionally, they enjoyed membership and participation with Legatus, a Catholic business leadership organization, where they shared their faith with others in the business community. Dan & Mary truly dedicated their lives together to their family and their faith. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, and children Dan Jr. (Jane) of Perrysburg, John (Margaret) of Sylvania, Mary Catherine (Bob) Schlatter of Ottawa Hills, Chris (Pam) of Toledo, Joe (Nancy) of Perrysburg, Caroline (Ted) German of Madison, WI, Eric (Mandy) of Cincinnati. He had 22 grandchildren, with number 23 on the way. He is also survived by his brothers Tony (Sharon) DiSalle and Joe (Darlene) DiSalle and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a generous, kind, hard-working, fun-loving, faithful man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the staff at the Hickman Cancer Center at Flower Hospital and the staffs at Flower and Toledo Hospital. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S Reynolds Rd; on Saturday April 5, 2014 from 5-8 pm and on Sunday April 6, from 2-8 pm where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will begin in the mortuary on Monday April 7, 2014 at 10:00 am followed by the funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, Ohio., at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may take the form of contribution to the Dan & Mary DiSalle Scholarship Fund at St. Francis de Sales High School, St. Ursula Academy, or Little Sisters of the Poor.
