Doris Thelma Bertolina

Doris Thelma Bertolina, 94, peacefully departed this life at home with her family at her side on December 29, 2022. Doris was one of 6 children born to Florence and Harry Walker. They all predeceased her along with her husband Jim. Doris was born in Birmingham, England, on March 18, 1928. She grew up in Wisbech, England. Doris had a very full life. As a youngster she biked everywhere: 28 miles to the North Sea for a beach day, 20 miles to Sandringham to watch the future Queen Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, play on the estates' grounds. During WWII, Doris worked the fields so the men could be freed for fighting the war. During severe rationing, she helped her dad garden a rood of land to keep the family in produce. In 1952 Doris emigrated to the USA on the Queen Mary. After settling in Toledo she met her future husband, James Bertolina (Mr. Burton), her hairdresser, at the former LaSalles Beauty Salon. Jim, a veteran of the war, began dating Doris and married her in January of 1955. They opened Burton's Hairstylists and started a family later that year. Burton's is still thriving after 67 years. Doris and Jim loved to travel and made many trips to the Coral Cay in Fort Lauderdale. Doris was very involved in her children's lives and did a lot of volunteer work. She modeled for fashion shows, cooked spaghetti dinners for the YMCA swim team, made Seder suppers for OLPH, did lots of flower arranging, and kept her home and yard beautifully. Doris is survived by her children, Wendy (Greg Roszczipka), Ian (Susannah) Bertolina, Gina Bertolina and Lisa (Danny Katzman); her grandchildren, Noah (Sarah Angus), Tobias and Jonah Roszczipka, Benjamin Katzman and Isabella, Dane and Samuel Bertolina. Doris died the way she lived-with grace, grit and determination, never complaining and accepting her illness. In her final months she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Gina, and several of her grandchildren. The Funeral Mass will be at Calvary Cemetery Chapel, 2224 Dorr St., on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. with an hour of visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow.
