Edward J. Fitzgerald

Edward J Fitzgerald (95) died peacefully at his daughter’s home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Affectionately known as Dad, Papa and Mr. Fitz to his loving family and many friends, he was born on July 31, 1917, in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of William and Rose Fitzgerald. After his father died in 1919, his mother remarried and he was raised with four brothers and a sister by his mother and his loving stepfather, Joseph Hohlman. After graduating from school, Ed became a banker until he joined Owens-Illinois Glass Company where he was a 40-year employee. The company moved him and his family from Streator IL to Toledo OH and then to Charleston, WV, North Bergen, NJ and back again to Toledo in 1964. In 1981, he retired and devoted his time to his family, his community and his many interests. As a member of St Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, Ed served his church in various roles, including leader of the parish council and Holy Name Society, and volunteer for many activities. For 25 years, he was a Eucharistic Minister at the former MCO Hospital. He also made many friends in his ten years as a Mobile Meals Volunteer. A man of many interests, Ed bowled (high game 298); golfed until last year and played a weekly game of duplicate bridge. He loved fishing on Lake Erie and willingly baited the hooks of his squeamish fishing partners. He was a die-hard Cubs fan since 1927 and he is still waiting for them to win the World Series. Our dear Dad cherished his family, loved his country and never met a stranger. His stories are legendary, full of vivid descriptions, colorful characters and memorable details. He loved life and made the effort to learn something new every day. Dad was married for almost 66 years to Mom, Anne Harcharik, who preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by their six children: Nancy (Paul) Arendt; Gloria (Allan) Enk; Edward (Karen); Joseph (Nancy); Michael (Peggy); and Mary (Jim) Lazzari. He was proud to be Papa to 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way. He is also survived by his brother Robert Hohlman, sister Rosemary Chapman, numerous nieces and nephews, other extended family and many friends. The family thanks Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their support to Dad and us. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Central City Ministries or Disabled American Veterans. Visitation will be Friday June 28th from 2-8:00 pm at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 So. Reynolds Road. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, June 29th at 10:00 at St Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd. Dad will be remembered for many things; but, most of all, he loved God, his country, his family and friends. To honor him, say a prayer, display your flag, and have a cold Bud (in a bottle, please) with family and friends.
