Eleanor Jane Harbaugh

Eleanor Jane Harbaugh, 99 (Miss Ellie), passed away peacefully September 30, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at her home at The Woodlands, where she resided the last 16 years. Eleanor was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 2, 1918 to Adolph and Julia Syring. She graduated from St. Ursula Academy in 1936 and married her beloved husband Mel on December 12, 1945 at Gesu Church. They were married 56 years before his passing in July 2001. Eleanor dedicated her life to supporting him and raising her children and supporting all that they did in life. She worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Nursing Services for 20 years. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling especially to Rome, Italy to see the Pope. She lived in both Lake Worth and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for 25 years. Eleanor was a beautiful lady, a loving wife, mother, and wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a devout Catholic all of her life and when she could no longer attend Mass, you could be sure she was watching it on TV. Eleanor was an especially charitable lady, who never forgot she came from very humble beginnings. She was a generous and passionate supporter of many organizations and charities, especially the Palm Beach Opera and The Toledo Club, where she was a member for over 40 years. Charities she supported included the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Toledo, Make-A-Wish, Camp Courageous, ALS Association of Northern Ohio Chapter, Wreaths Across America, Lois Pope Life Summer Camp in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, The Toledo Minority Golf Association, the TDGA, the Evans Scholars, and the University of Toledo Athletics. She was a great supporter for education and was a benefactor for St. Francis de Sales High School, St. Ursula Academy and Blessed Sacrament elementary school. She was a longtime member of the Lourdes College Auxiliary. Additionally over the years she was a member of Sylvania and Stone Oak Country Clubs, Sherbrooke Golf and Country Club in Lake Worth, FL, and the Ballen Iles Club in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mel, and her daughter in law, Charline Harbaugh. Eleanor is survived by her sister Jean Dailey, her sons Mel and Don Harbaugh (Jan Fry), her grandchildren Mark (Amy) Harbaugh, Jennifer (Joe) Dorfmeyer, Holly (Gary) Cross, Nicole Harbaugh (Kevin Smith) and her great-grandchildren Dakota Bridge, Declan and Avery Harbaugh. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Wednesday, October 4 from 2-8 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7. The funeral will begin at Coyle on Thursday, October 5, with an hour of visitation from 9-10 a.m. followed by Mass at Gesu Church at 11. Entombment will be at Toledo Memorial Park. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Woodlands, her caregivers from Carelink Home Health Services and to Ashanti Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Toledo , ALS Association of Northern Ohio Chapter in Memory of Charline Harbaugh, St. Francis de Sales High School, St. Ursula Academy or Sunset Retirement Communities.
