Harold Denny DeViney

Denny DeViney passed peacefully on Saturday evening, March 17th, at UTMC with family and friends at his bedside. Denny was born July 13, 1938 to Margaret Breniff and Harold Jess DeViney. He grew up on Glencove Drive in Toledo, Ohio, and graduated from the former Ladyfield Grade School, Libby High School (1956) and Bowling Green State University. He was a long time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Maumee, a founding member of the Toledo LP Gas Marketers Association and a former member of St. John’s Jesuit Fathers’ Board and St. Joseph’s School Board. Denny spent most of his career in the propane industry. He retired from Sun Oil Company after 25 years, then worked for McTeir Supply Company followed by IPS, finally retiring in 2008. He loved working with people and many customers became his close friends. Denny was a lifelong athlete who played football for Libby High School and ran track and field for BGSU. He was an avid golfer, golfing year round in all kinds of weather. He enjoyed coaching his children’s and grandchildren’s basketball, football, soccer and softball teams. Denny joked, “If I am the coach, my kids might have a chance to play!” He had strong bonds with the “Poker Group” (high school friends who played together for over 50 years), golfing buddies, neighbors and longtime friends. But Denny’s number one priority was his family. He enjoyed every moment with them and was always there when they needed him with encouragement and a great sense of humor. Carrying on Denny’s loving spirit are his wife of 46 years Middy Baker DeViney; children Erin Evans (David), Patrick DeViney (Jessica), Megan Taylor (Chip) and Michael DeViney (Erin); grandchildren Brynn Evans, Landen & Olivia DeViney, CJ Taylor and Ragan & Evelyn DeViney; sister Patricia Conklin and brother Tom DeViney; niece Julie Jones (Hugh) and nephews Jim, Andrew and John Conklin. Visitation for friends and family will be at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Wednesday, March 21 from 3 to 8pm with a scripture service at 7pm. Funeral service will begin at Coyle’s on Thursday, March 22 at 10:30am with the funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Maumee) at 11am.
