King Dr. James A. Dr. James A. King, age 73, of Toledo passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from metastatic melanoma in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 16, 1940 in Muncy, PA to Robert W. and Marjorie (Schneider) King. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Jim received his BA degree from St. Procopius College in Lisle, Ill. and received his Master’s and Ph D from the University of Notre Dame. He was Professor Emeritus and Fellow at the University of Toledo where he taught sociology for 29 years. He retired in 1999 from the university and continued as an entrepreneur. He was a partner in Benefits Comprehensive, Inc., Integrated Psych Care, Community Research Associates, and Scriptsense. He served on various boards such as Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Mental Health Board, Notre Dame Academy, and was recently appointed to the Board of Mercy College. He was founder and coach of the Toledo Celtics Soccer Club. He also coached The University of Toledo Club Soccer Team which went on to win the national championship in 1996. Jim was an avid skier and boater and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his wife Joan of 41 years, children; Ian (Teresa), Erin (Ryan) Hafner, Meghan (Chad) Gregory, and Eamon; Grandchildren Kelsey, Cameron, Ashton King, Riley Hafner, Keegan, Piper, Peyton, and Bentley Gregory. He was awaiting the arrival of another Gregory grandchild; brother Robert (Kathy) King; sisters Nancy (Bob Herr) McCarty, Sandy (Charlie) Buck, Dot (Gary) Bennett, Leah (Bill) Way and Betty Jo (Phil) Soohy as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful canine companion Jake. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Friday from 2-8pm where a scripture service will be held at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11am at Gesu Church, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10am. Memorials may take the form of contributions to University of Michigan Melanoma Research, Gesu Church, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
