Lawrence A. Cousino Obituary Lawrence Albert Cousino, 92, of Holland, OH, passed peacefully to his new life on Dec. 22, 2025. He leaves behind the love of his life, Carole, and their children Michael Cousino (partner Beth Weilant) and Diane (Robert) Mushaben. Larry and Carole were blessed to enjoy 66 years of married life. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Laura (Schardt) Cousino. Larry grew up on the family farm in Toledo, where they raised squash and other field crops. The Cousino Greenhouses were also long time members of the Toledo Growers Association, growing and trucking vegetables for sale in local markets. When he was 22, Larry was called from the farm to serve in the Army in the 553rd Engineer Battalion and was stationed in France. During his time there, he was very touched by the kindness of the French people he met, who went out of their way to show deep appreciation to American servicemen. His uncle's relatives in France also took special care of him when he was able to visit with them. When he returned from the service, Larry did his best to continue the family farm, but economic challenges in farming eventually led him to decide to find a more stable career path. He worked for a few years as a foreman at Gulf States Paper Company. He later turned his love of machine work into a career as an industrial machinist. He was largely self-taught and a natural problem-solver, and the work he did usually required his creativity. He also used his GI Bill benefits to take some classes in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toledo. He worked for a variety of small companies over the years and had many interesting experiences. Occasionally he was sent out to work on foreign freighters that were anchored in the Port of Toledo during winter. The working conditions were frigid and the crews didn't speak English, but they fed him well and he enjoyed the novel experience. But by far his happiest years of work were the final years of his career when he was a machinist for the Mechanical Engineering College at the University of Toledo. More than once he had the opportunity to explain to the very well-educated graduate students the reasons why their designs were not going to work! He may have been self-taught, but he read and studied extensively and was an excellent and patient teacher in his role there. The range of projects he worked on included orthopedic biomedical prototypes as well as parts for the student SAE competition race cars. His work was appreciated by students and faculty alike, and in 2000 he was presented with the University's Outstanding Staff Member Award. In his spare time, Larry enjoyed using his machinist's skills to create scale working gas, steam and Stirling engines. He displayed dozens of his models at shows all across the Midwest. Larry was a quiet, gentle, wise, humble man who focused on his family. We really believed he could fix anything, and he nearly always did. He also planned many road trips for the family, which leaned heavily on Civil War battlefields and science museums. In 2019, he was able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. which was a highlight of his life. He was devoted to Carole and as his health faltered, she was his primary concern. Because of his ingenuity and her care, he was able to stay at home until the last few days of his life. Those final days were greatly eased by the amazing, compassionate care of the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, for whom we are so grateful. Services will be on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and funeral Mass at 11:00 am, both at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH 43614. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Coyle Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
