Louis "Champ" Mollenkamp

Louis B. “Champ” Mollenkamp Louis B. Mollenkamp, nicknamed Champ as an infant, 76, made his transition on January 15, 2015 surrounded by family and friends at Toledo Hospital after a challenging bout with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Champ was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on June 15, 1938 to Mary Evelyn (Bain) and Louis S. Mollenkamp. They returned to Toledo a few months later where he resided the rest of his life. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1956 and married his loyal wife of 55 years, Maryann Stegeman, in 1959. They raised their three children, Louis, Patrick and Heather as a close and loving family, living and working in the West Toledo area to this day. They have two grand-daughters, Chelsea and Emily (Patrick's daughters). Heather’s little dog, Lolita, was his faithful companion, as anyone who knew Champ, knew his pets were also part of his family. Champ is also survived by his three younger siblings; his brother Dr. Jim and wife Michele and his sister Mary Ann Mollenkamp, both residents of Southern California, his brother, Al and wife Mary, (Sylvania); his in-laws, Jim and Barb Stegeman (Toledo), Elizabeth and Dr.Ray Goodman(Cleveland); special nephew Ted Tehensky and his many other cherished nieces and nephews. Champ treasured the time he spent with his family... rarely missing a college football game on weekends by his wife's side. Lou was a lifelong fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and was able to celebrate the recent National Championship from his hospital bed at Toledo Hospital with his best friend Maryann .He enjoyed weekly lunches he shared with his son Pat and brother Al always talking football, law, and finance. Lou was a small business owner and entrepreneur and enjoyed working and traveling along side his son Louis and daughter Heather. The many years of love and fun Papa Champ spent with his granddaughters and the annual trip he made with his wife to California to visit his brother Jim, Michele and sister Mary Ann along with his nieces and many friends. Champ’s animated blue eyes and warm smile would light up whenever he encountered a thing of beauty~ be it jazz or classical music, art or photography, gourmet food and chocolates, his love for clothes and Starbucks coffee. He loved to shop! He took much joy in maintaining his lifelong friendships from his childhood on Sabra Road and Longfellow School to his cronies from DeVilbiss High School. He also developed many great friends from his years in business. The family would like to thank Dr. Fadhil Hussein and Dr. Ronald Wainz for their support and personalized care. We also want to thank the staff of the Ninth Floor Respiratory Progressive Unit of Toledo Hospital for their outstanding comfort and attention. Champ is donating his body to the University of Toledo College of Medicine in the hope that it may help researchers better understand Pulmonary Fibrosis.
