Louis Melbin Zavac

Louis M. Zavac 87, of Toledo passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016 peacefully at home surrounded by his seven children. Born on November 28, 1928 to Louis and Mary (Jacobs) Zavac, he attended Oakdale Grade School and Central Catholic High School. Upon graduating in 1946, Lou enlisted in the United Sates Navy and is considered one of the last of the WWII veterans. Lou attended Bowling Green State University on the GI bill where he earned his BA in business. As a marine he served in active duty in Korea. Lou married Carol Fosty in 1953 and they spent 57 years together. They began their married life in Cleveland Ohio where he worked as an accountant for Shell Oil before starting their family. Moving back to Toledo he worked as a Toledo Firefighter. Continuing his career, he worked as an agent for the IRS. He graduated from the University of Toledo Law School in 1968, and served as a trust officer for Ohio Citizens Bank before entering private law practice. Louis and Carol enjoyed traveling extensively to Italy, Israel, The Greek Islands, Egypt, Istanbul, Hungary, Austria, Poland, The Czech Republic, New Zealand and Australia. His many interests included family parties, golf, the Symphony, musicals, theater and jazz. Lou loved a good project. Lou was preceded in death by his wife Carol and brother Emery Zavac. He is survived by seven children Jeff (Nancy) Zavac, Gina (Ray) Okoroski, Becky (Fred) Braker, David (Joanne) Zavac, Joseph (Amy) Zavac, Michael (Judy) Zavac, and Matt Zavac. Also surviving are grandchildren Elizabeth (Adam) Kolwicz, and Danny Okoroski, Catherine Braker, Kayla and Madeleine Zavac, David, Christopher and Andrew Zavac and Brittany Zavac; great grandson Aidan Kolwicz, as well as Lou’s dear friend Joanne Moore. Many thanks to the University of Toledo Medical Center for the care he received since 1974. To show his appreciation he volunteered for 25 years and has donated his body for medical research. His family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of NW Ohio especially Carolyn and Marki for their compassionate care. Friends may visit at The Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Friday from 3 to 8:00 pm where a Scripture service will be held at 7:00 pm. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Maumee.
