Louise Veronica Henahan

Louise Henahan, a long-term resident of West Toledo, passed away in Thousand Oaks, California on May 28th, 2024. Louise lived a happy 94 years, 68 of them married to her beloved husband, Jim Henahan. Louise is survived by her sons, Marty (Carrie) and Pat (Ellen) both residents of the Los Angeles area, 5 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her husband Jim passed away in Toledo on August 11, 2021. Louise was the youngest child of Joseph and Elizabeth Poch, of York St. in Toledo. Along with her siblings Elizabeth, Priscilla, and Joe and childhood friends, Louise enjoyed growing up in her Hungarian neighborhood. Louise was a 1948 graduate of Central Catholic High School. For nearly a year after high school graduation, Louise worked at the old LaSalle and Koch's department store. She took this gap year to be more certain of her intended life's profession - teaching. In September of 1949 Louise entered Mary Manse college. She graduated in May 1953 and shortly thereafter married her husband Jim. While pursuing her college studies, Louise worked most summers as a playground leader. During this time she worked 2 summers at Collins Park, and one each at Oakdale, Ottawa and Close parks. When Jim began his military duties, Louise began her teaching career, first with St. Rose, Perrysburg, Ohio and then at Riverside elementary school. She began her long-term teaching career at Larchmont school in 1960. She loved this position, her students and her fellow teachers. She frequently remarked that she loved each day going to teach and that it never felt like a job. Unfortunately, in August 1990 an automobile accident forced Louise into retirement. In retirement, Louise and Jim enjoyed attending Saturday Night mass at Corpus Christi University Parish followed by dinner at Jing Chuan Chinese Restaurant, rooting for the University of Toledo Rockets sports teams, attending musical and other performances by Toledo area high schools, and volunteering as a member of and contributor to various philanthropic associations, including the Towne Club in Toledo. With Jim, Louise loved to walk, ride her bicycle and use her in-line skates. She and Jim frequently visited the metroparks in the Toledo and Detroit areas, to walk, birdwatch and occasionally cross-country ski. Louise was a devoted caregiver to Jim in his later years. After Jim's passing in August 2021, Louise moved to Los Angeles to live with her sons, and enjoyed many happy experiences discovering new foods, new friends and enjoying the warm climate of Southern California. Always smiling, forever optimistic, this lovely lady with the very generous heart will always be missed by her family, many friends and former students. Memorials may be made to the Henahan Family scholarships at Saint Francis or Central Catholic High Schools or to Corpus Christi University Parish.
