Margaret Mattimoe

Margaret McArdle Mattimoe, of Toledo, Ohio, died on April 19, 2016, following a very brief stay at Ebeid Hospice. Margaret was preceded in death by John, her devoted husband of forty-five years, in 2004. Survived by daughter and son-in-law Peggy and David Sturgeon and granddaughters Tierney, Erin, and Megan Sturgeon of Toledo; son and daughter-in-law John and Kathleen (Sullivan) and granddaughters Katy and Molly Mattimoe of Whitehouse; and son and daughter-in-law Jim and Betsy (Perrin) and granddaughters Lillian and Charlotte Mattimoe of Granville. Margaret is also survived by sisters-in-law Marjorie Hutton of Maumee and Dona McArdle of Midland, MI; brother-in-law Rev. Edward J. Mattimoe, S.J. of Clarkson, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Gertrude McArdle; sisters Kathryn Pigott, Mary Towns, and Genevieve Koch; and brothers James McArdle and Thomas McArdle. Margaret’s passing marks the end of a generation of McArdle siblings that truly believed that family was the most important thing in life. They supported each other through tough times and joined together to celebrate good times, and it gives us comfort to know that the McArdle family is together again. Margaret was born in Ionia, Michigan, where she was one of six children raised by her mother and maternal grandfather following the death of her father when Margaret was only four years old. Margaret graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School in Ionia, then earned her degree from Michigan State University where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Margaret spent several years teaching elementary school in Birmingham, MI. In 1959, Margaret married John and moved to Toledo, where they built their life together. In later years, Margaret enjoyed escaping the Ohio winter for Clearwater, Florida. Margaret devoted her life to the care and support of her family and her circle of friends. Margaret especially loved younger people—she was a favorite of her nieces and nephews and her children’s friends. When her granddaughters arrived, they quickly became the center of Margaret’s world. Margaret loved people and took a genuine interest in each person’s story, and she had a unique ability to converse at length with anyone. Margaret possessed a near-photographic memory and would often astound listeners with details about people, dates, and events. The family wishes to thank Gale Kellum and the caregivers with Guardian Angels. These kind individuals and the care that they provided made it possible for Margaret to remain in her beloved home until her very last days. Visitation will be held at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Friday from 4:00-8:00 pm where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday beginning at 11:15 am in the mortuary followed by the Mass of Resurrection in Gesu Church at noon. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
