Mary Elizabeth Edgeworth

Mary Elizabeth (Tate) Edgeworth, 87, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024. Mary was born on November 18, 1936, to Robert and Marie (Scrimgeour) Tate in Toledo, Ohio. She was a graduate of Mary Manse College, Toledo, Ohio, earning a bachelor's in education. Mary started her teaching career at Rosary Cathedral and spent the remainder at Washington Local Schools, teaching third through fifth grades. Mary genuinely enjoyed working with her students and being a part of their education. Mary was a talented pianist, loved to play all types of music, and she enjoyed singing in all her school choirs. Mary always loved to entertain family and friends. As a child, she was often called on by her brothers to entertain friends and guests, but her father and Uncle John always had priority for any musical requests. She also loved all animals, especially dogs, but most memorably her faithful companions, Taffy, and Tanna. Mary was affiliated with all her school alumnae associations and the Lucas County and Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Mary thoroughly enjoyed her associations with a sisterhood of women called "The Daughters of Mary" from St. Joan of Arc Parish. Volunteering was another passion of Mary's throughout her life. She volunteered for The American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, The Claver House, Bethany House, and ushered at the Stranahan Theater. An active member of St. Joan of Arc Parish, she enjoyed preparing meals for luncheons and making calls to parishioners to promote the annual blood drive. Helping and doing for others was something that brought Mary much satisfaction. Travel was something Mary did often and found great joy and pleasure in doing so. Her trips included Hawaii and Ireland with friends. The most memorable travels were when she was with her husband, Jim. They traveled frequently to Florida and Pennsylvania and took numerous cruises together. They were both also avid Notre Dame fans, Go Irish! Mary always cherished her time with family, especially the most recent family gathering when her brother Mike and his family were visiting from Kansas. Mary loved all holiday gatherings. Her family and friends always brought a special sparkle to her life and made the holidays even more enjoyable. She was known for baking and gifting her famous Irish Killarney bread and milk chocolate fudge. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Edgeworth Sr.; parents, Robert and Marie (Scrimgeour) Tate; siblings, Robert (Lois) Tate, Joseph (Roberta) Tate, and Jack (Lorraine) Tate. Mary is survived by her brother Mike (Margaret) Tate of Kansas; is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Parish, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH, 43614, at 11:00 a.m. where the family will begin greeting guests at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery, 5725 Hill Ave, Toledo, OH, 43615, immediately following the mass.
