Mary Anne Lenkay Blackall M.D.

Mary Anne died March 26, 2015 at the age of 93. She was born August 1, 1921, the second of nine children, to Louis A. and Mary B. (Kovesdi) Lenkay. She was awarded the Bishop’s Cross when she graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1939, and then graduated from DeSales College in 2 ½ years with a B. A. degree. It was there that she met her future husband, Clair J. Blackall, who was her Mathematics Professor. Following graduation, she worked as a civilian for the United States Army Signal Corps in New Jersey. Returning to Toledo, Mary Anne worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital as a Medical Technician, and also taught Chemistry to the nursing students. One of the experiments was a lesson on wine making. Mary Anne was highly attracted to the medical field and enrolled at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. Following graduation in 1956, Mary Anne became the first female intern at St. Vincent’s. After a few years in General Medicine practice, she completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Medical College of Ohio, and then joined the faculty at MCO where she continued to teach medical students until she retired a few years ago. Geriatrics was dear to her heart and she happily spent over 50 years volunteering as a Physician at the Little Sisters of the Poor. She and her husband, Clair enjoyed traveling, raising thoroughbred horses and following Notre Dame Football. She was a member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, Toledo Academy of Medicine, Ohio State Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, MCO Physician Retiree’s, St. Vincent’s Hospital, the Third Order of St. Francis, and served on the boards of Central Catholic High School and the Little Sisters of the Poor. Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Clair; her parents; brother, Louis G.; sisters, Mary, Magdalene and Carmelita. She is survived by her brother, Joseph (Joanne) Lenkay; sisters, Margaret (Robert) Mangas, Rose (Glen) Bollin and Anne Gothier. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Sunday, March 29th from 3-8 p.m. where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 30th beginning at 10:00 a.m., in the mortuary, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church at 10:30 a.m. Entombment Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may take the form of contributions to Central Catholic High School, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church or to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
