Nicholas Joseph Nicolaidis

Nicholas Joseph Nicolaidis, age 73, of Toledo, Ohio passed away after a lengthy battle with Type II Diabetes, Heart, and Kidney Disease on June 9, 2016, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Nick was born February 15, 1943 at Mercy Hospital to parents Catherine and Nicholas Nicolaidis and was raised in the 15th St. neighborhood of downtown Toledo. Nick proudly graduated from Toledo Scott High School in 1962, where he played football for four years as a guard and was named to the All City Team. He also served his country in the National Guard Reserves from 1965 -1966. Nick had many physical fitness interests over the years, including tennis and golf. His love of running led to competing in 5k and 10k races throughout the city. College football was a love he shared with his family and friends. He was a huge fan of Notre Dame, The Ohio State University and The University of Toledo. His love of sports and people led him to his favorite hobby, photography. He was a noted amateur photographer who captured his 3 son’s countless sporting events, nature, and social events in and around town. He was often found on the sidelines capturing shots for the University of Toledo football team as well. Many of the images he treasured of friends and family were framed and displayed in both his homes and restaurants. The restaurant industry was where Nick shined as a hard worker, innovator, storyteller, and friend to all. His extensive early work in the hospitality industry throughout Toledo, most notably The Faba and the famed Peppermint Club, led him to his business partnership with his brother, Gus Nicolaidis. Together they collaborated on many ventures including Nick’s Hot Dog, The Gatsby I, The Governor’s Inn, The Downtown I in the Spitzer Building, and the legendary Oak’en Bucket and The Hungry I. Nick was the sole proprietor of the iconic Nick’s Hungry I from 1984 until he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he spent several years. Nick never met a stranger and he always left you with simple words of wisdom, showing what a sweet and loving person he was; his love of family, friends, and life was apparent in everything he did. He was a man of many mantras and life lessons that he loved to share. Some of his favorites were: “Give the people what they want!“ - “Keep it Simple” - “Enjoy the View” and most importantly “Life is Good!” Nick was preceded in death by his parents Catherine and Nicholas, as well as son, Nicholas III, in 2009. Nick is survived by his sons: Anthony (Susan) Nicolaidis of Dallas, TX, Marcus (Lilah) Nicolaidis of New Jersey; his siblings: Gus Nicolaidis (Cheryl), Elaine Nicolaidis, Joe Horvath (Philomena); his grandchildren, Marta Elaine, Jude Joseph, Lena Sofia, and Daphne Danice Nicolaidis; his nieces Nicole Nicolaidis, Ashley Nicolaidis; Nephew James Nicolaidis, and goddaughter Stacee Scott Buechel (Andrew) of Columbus, OH. Visitation will be Monday, June 20th at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Road Toledo, Ohio from 4p.m. - 8p.m., and Tuesday June 21, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
