Patricia M. Danford

Patricia “Pat” Margaret (O’Dwyer) Danford died on December 16, 2016. She was born in Toledo on February 18, 1923 to Leo K. and Catherine M. (Cullen) O’Dwyer and was the widow of Paul F. Danford. Pat was an Editorial Assistant at the Catholic Chronicle, the newspaper of the Diocese of Toledo, for over 30 years, working with founding editor, Francis I. Nally and his successor, Daniel J. McCarthy. When Pat married Paul Danford October 8, 1949, the diocesan policy was that no married women could work there. The policy later changed. In 1965, editor Nally asked how many days she could work for him while he looked for a full-time staffer for the newsroom. As Pat told it, “He never got another person; I added days and didn’t leave.” On December 31, 1990 she did leave when she retired at the same time as editor Dan McCarthy. “It’s an end of an era at the Catholic Chronicle” wrote fellow-staffer Tom Kelly about the retirement of these Chronicle veterans. Pat was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and of Notre Dame Academy. She was active in the early years of the YCW (Young Christian Workers) and one of the founding members of the Toledo Council of Catholic Youth (TCCY) and of the Bethany House. Pat loved the written word, sending cards and notes to relatives and friends all of her life. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia M. Delgado and Deborah A. Tucker; twin sister, Joan L. Neuser; grandchildren, Max B. (Jennifer) Delgado, Bridget P. Delgado, Sarah C. Tucker, Veronica Tucker and Michael P. Tucker; great-grandchildren, Julian J. Gifford, Ana C. Delgado and Lillian M. Tucker as well as her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret M. O’Dwyer and her son-in-law, Winfor Tucker. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH 43610, on Tuesday, December 20th. at 1:00 pm where the family will begin receiving guests at 12:00 pm. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
