Fr. Thomas Moore O.S.F.S.

Brother, priest, confidant, spiritual guide and, most of all, friend to many. Died peacefully from pancreatic cancer on May 29, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio surrounded by family, friends and members of his second family, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Tom was born on April 1, 1938, grew up in Niagara Falls, New York, the son of William and Margaret Moore. In 1956, after graduating from Bishop Duffy High School in Niagara Falls, he joined the Oblates. He received a bachelor’s degree from Catholic University of America and was awarded a licentiate in sacred theology from the University of Frieburg in Switzerland. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 at the site of the tomb of St. Francis de Sales in Annecy France. Fr. Moore served the Church and the Oblates in many capacities. He taught at Oblate high schools in Philadelphia, Detroit and Toledo. He did parish ministry in Detroit, was chaplain to the Adrian Dominican Sisters in Adrian, and worked as a hospital chaplain in Saginaw, MI. Tom’s greatest joy came in helping with the formation of young men preparing for religious life and the priesthood. He was a member of the first Toledo-Detroit Oblate Province “formation team” from 1971-’74. He was a member of the formation team at the former St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, MI from 1979-’83. He served as the director of seminarians for the Diocese of Saginaw from 1991-2004. In Saginaw he worked closely with his dear friend, Bishop Ken Untener. Finally, in 2008, at the age of 70, he sensed a call to Haiti to help with the formation of young Haitians interested in joining the Oblates there. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, many aunts and uncles, including two special “aunts” Loretta and Alice O’Donnell. He is survived by his brother, Dr. James Moore (Phyllis) of Lewiston, NY; sister, Mary McAnulty (Tom) of New York City; brother, Richard Moore (Marty Crowder) of Toronto, Ontario; sister, Ann Moore of Lewiston, New York; nieces and nephews Stephen McAnulty (Jeanette Rosario), Kathleen Bernier (Hans) , Beth Pascali (Umberto), Anne Moore, William Moore, Cathleen (Toby) Mordkoff, Hope Moore (Peter Girardi); six great-nephews & nieces and a host of Oblate brothers from all over the world. Fr. Thomas Moore, will lie in-state at St Pius X Church, 3011 Carskaddon Ave Toledo, OH 43606 on Monday, June 3, 2013, where the visitation will be from 6:00 - 9:00 pm and a Vigil Liturgy to be held at 8:00 pm. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday June 4, from 9:00 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oblates of St Francis Haitian Seminary Fund or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. The Coyle Funeral Home is assisting the family and the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales with services.
