Thomas "Fuzzy" Spears

Thomas M. Spears "Fuzzy" passed away unexpectedly in his home on February 12, 2025. His family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death. He was born on March 1, 1950 to Alfred and Rosa Spears in Kildav, Ky. They moved their family of four children to Toledo, Ohio when Tom was 3 years old. Tom was a 1968 graduate of Waite High School in Toledo, Ohio where he played football and was a member of the Waite High Choir. Many members of the choir tell stories of Tom's expressive voice when he sang. After high school, Tom went to work at Acklin Stamping in Toledo, Ohio, where he joined the apprentice program for Tool and Die. In 1987, Tom left there and was employed at the Mazda/Ford stamping plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. He worked there for 30 years, retiring in October, 2016. While there Tom became a Vice President, then President of Local 3000. His love for the union and the membership played an important part of his life. Tom also was a Scout leader for Scout Pack 252, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish and went on many adventures with the troop. Tom is survived by his wife Kathy of 52 years. He first met the love of his life in 1970 when he slid across a hood of a car in the McDonalds parking lot and told her then that he was going to marry her. He was right; they were married 2 years later and had 3 children, Jason (Tamie), Shawn (Kelly) and Amanda O'Brien (Robert). He cherished each of his seven grandchildren, Madison, Brady, Logan, Garrett and Warner, Tristan, and Evelyn and always took an active role in their lives. Tom is also survived by his sisters, Linda Kay Spears and Laverne (Sis) Cramer and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom is predeceased by his father, Alfred; mother, Rosa (Hunter) Spears; grandmother, Hester Peyton; sister, Doris Hirschy and niece, Robin Phillips-Ely. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 Reynolds Rd. Toledo, Ohio 43614, April 4, 2025, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.. A private interment, for family only, will be held Saturday, April 5. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the National PCOS Awareness Association. Tom enjoyed every moment of his life, especially with his family. He was always singing a tune anywhere he went. His hearty laughter and great hugs will be missed by so many. He loved taking pictures, keeping up with his friends and family on Facebook and was constantly looking for places to travel.
