Elizabeth A. Sullivan

Elizabeth Harney Sullivan died on March 28, 2011 at the Goerlich Center, Sylvania, Ohio where she had been a resident for the last three years. Elizabeth was the seventh of eight children, born on December 18, 1932, to William H. Harney and Ellen V. (Carty) Harney of Boston, Massachusetts. She was the wife of Paul R. Sullivan and the mother of Paul R., Jr. (Jackie), Cornelius P. (Laurie), Richard C. (Lori), Mary E. Subleski (Chris), Kathleen A. Mattimoe (John), Jean C. Guerin (Marshall) and Therese E. Sullivan. She was Nana to 9 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Beth attended Cheverus School, Jamaica Plain, MA, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA, Regis College, and Weston, MA where she earned a degree in Child Psychology in 1954. She received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1958 while attending Boston College. She also received a Specialist’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Toledo in 1978. She taught for five years in both Boston and Dedham, MA and taught for 24 years for the Toledo Public Schools where she was a Reading Specialist. Beth and Paul settled in Toledo at the time of their marriage and enjoyed their life here during their 51+ years of marriage. They were members of Rosary Cathedral Parish until 1978, Gesu Parish until1984 and Corpus Christi University Parish for the remaining years. Beth was a parish council member at Rosary Cathedral and the first woman parish council president in the early 1970’s. She was also a founding member of the Women of the Old West End (W.O.W.E’s). Beth was a stay at home mom until all of her children were in school, and after retiring from teaching was a diligent and capable collector and seller of children’s books, aka The Rare Bookworm. She attended many book shows in Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio. The bulk of her book collecting was done on trips to the Northeast. Beth knew just about every rare and collectible bookstore from Bar Harbor, ME to Provincetown, MA. In earlier years the family spent summer vacations at her family’s cottage in Hull, MA. A special remembrance of beloved friends, especially the ‘Pot Luck Group’ who for over 35 years have met every 5-6 weeks for a meal and lively conversations in which Beth was a vocal participant. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd, Toledo, Ohio on Thursday from 2-8p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday beginning at 10:15 a.m. in the mortuary followed by the Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi University Parish at 11 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff at the Goerlich Center; their smiles, compassion and endless care for Beth is appreciated. .
