John Anthony Rohen Jr.

John Anthony Rohen Jr. age 83 of Whitehouse, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on November 4, 2012. He was the son of John A. Rohen Sr. and Mary Sharrar Hinman, born on September 15, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio. He was a 1947 graduate of Libbey High School and graduated with a B.A. from The University of Toledo. John proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in The United States Air Force and was a veteran of The Korean War. Early in his career, John was a reporter for The Toledo Blade, as well as a Parole Officer for the OH Adult Parole Authority. The remainder of his career he spent at The Sight Center of NW OH. He was initially hired to drive clients in the van, one of the many services provided, and one of his favorite responsibilities. At the time of his retirement John was the Director of Marketing and Communications. John was an avid birder and nature lover. He always kept his binoculars with him in case the opportunity to spot a new species presented itself. His other passion in life was literature, having read an extensive collection of works throughout his lifetime. As he neared his retirement years, he wrote a poem entitled “The Keep” that reflected upon the emotions he had when he thought of his family and our life together. This poem was eventually published in a national magazine, Modern Maturity. He was surprised to discover how manyu people were touched by his writing and he received letters from around the country expressing their appreciation of his work. John loved his family and genuinely enjoyed participating in family functions, especially the jigs dinner served each St. Patrick’s Day. In 1956 John married his bride Joan Sally Kolinski. Together they raised five children and 13 grandchildren. He was a member of Catholic War Veterans, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tom Hinman, Don Hinman and sister Betty (Hinman) Ryle. He is survived by his former wife and best friend Joanie, children Reverend Patrick J. Rohen, Paul (Stacey) Rohen, Karl (Debbie) Rohen, Kathie (Bob) Reyes and Jennifer Elder, grandchildren Nicholas Rohen, Luke Rohen, Andrew Rohen, Jacquelyn Rohen, Marissa Rohen, Sarah Rohen, Brittnie Reyes, Micki Reyes, Rylie Reyes, Kain Reyes, Christopher Elder, Annabelle Elder and Kacey Elder. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Friday from 2-9pm. A Rosary will be recited at 7pm followed by a Catholic War Veteran Service. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday beginning at 9:45am in the mortuary followed by the Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, Maumee at 10:30am. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
