Mary J. Stahl

Mary James (Sheets) Stahl, PhD, passed away suddenly on early June, 18th, 2024. She is survived by her daughters, Marnie and Jackie Stahl, her loving partner of over 12 years, Richard McCoy, her cousins, Caroline Wolfe, Dave (Sue) DuMont, Ann (Steve) Kaighin, Janet (Dave) Blue and their families, her trusted macaw Guido of 37 years and her current furballs, Coco Marie and Peanut. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Charles Stahl, her parents, James and Edith (Kelly) Sheets, and many furballs. She was loved and appreciated by many family, friends, and students. Mary Jim, or Doc Stahl, lived a very active and full life through the very last weekend. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on Jan. 13, 1945, Mary Jim grew up in the Beverly area and attended McAuley High School. She went on to attend Mary Manse College, where she studied education and mathematics. She concluded her education after marrying and having two children with her PhD in computer science from the University of Toledo in 1987. Mary Jim was very proud of her two daughters and was always there to support them for every major accomplishment and any need big or small. Her love of her daughters and the bond she shared with them was known among many, always in constant contact, offering support, advice, and laughter at a moment's notice. Her life's work was teaching. Thousands of students passed through her doors throughout her 4+ decades-long teaching career. She started at Bowsher, where she taught for 30+ years in math and computer programming. Her next stop was St. Ursula Academy, where she taught the same subjects and was active in supporting the rowing team. While teaching at both high schools, she also taught at the University of Toledo in Computer Science Engineering, and Mathematics. While her life's work was teaching STEM, her passion and hobbies were the arts. She was involved with school plays and Channel 30 Buy-Ins. Upon retiring, she cultivated a love for jewelry making, metalsmithing, and woodcarving; establishing Wood Turned Treasures with Rich. She went on to showcase her work at numerous art shows. She also had a lifelong love of gardening and being a green thumb. She was involved with various organizations throughout the years, including Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Gamma Gamma, Mary Manse Alumni Association (acting president), Toledo Rowing, and Red Hats Society. Her journey later in life with Rich led to enjoying winters in Bradenton, Florida, and spring and summers at the lake in Reading, Michigan, joined by her daughters on many a boat ride at sunset. Visitation will be Monday, June 24th, 3-7 p.m. at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S Reynolds Rd, Toledo, with a Prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joan of Arc Parish on Tuesday, June 25th at 11:00 a.m. and will be live streamed.
