Scott Robert Lee M.D.

Scott R Lee, M.D., age 56, passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 18, 2022 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by his wife of 24 years, Dr. Myung Jean (Kay), and his loving daughters, Michelle and Grace. Born in Seoul, South Korea on May 1, 1966, he was a son of the late Chung Soo Lee and Jung Ok Ko. Scott followed his parents to Toledo, Ohio in 1974, and grew up in Rossford, Ohio, graduating from Rossford High School. He said he spent his fair share in the principal's office growing up, but he was grateful for his teachers-some of whom he had the privilege of taking care of as a physician. Scott attended The Ohio State University along with his brothers, Steve, Jim, and his sister-in-law Wonhee. He graduated alongside his best friend, Wes Chang with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering. He remained a devoted Buckeye fan until the very end. After working as a civil engineer for Black & Veatch in Cincinnati for a couple of years, he realized that he wanted to find a new career centered around compassion. He felt the best way to accomplish his goals was to become a medical doctor. He attended and graduated from Case Western Reserve University with an MD degree in 1998. Upon graduation, he married the love of his life and best friend, Myung Jean. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Flower Hospital in 2001. Upon completion of his residency, he went into private practice with Fallen Timbers Family Physicians until 2017. He always wanted to give back to his community. Upon leaving Fallen Timbers Family Physicians, he joined Neighborhood Health Association where he treated the underserved and homeless community, often picking them up or paying for rides for his patients. He retired from NHA in 2019. He was frequently present at the Vision Kitchen in Toledo along with his family, preparing and serving meals. He generously supported their mission in many different ways. His family will continue to honor his dedication to giving to others. He had big plans for his retirement: he wanted to travel and do medical mission trips with his wife and daughters. In 2019, he traveled to Guatemala with his family, accompanying Dr. Richard Paat and his UTMC and SCORE crew. His legacy will be carried on by his wife and daughters for many years to come. The 2023 Guatemala medical mission trip will be dedicated to him in order to honor his commitment to medicine and helping those in need. Family was everything to him. His beautiful daughters Michelle and Grace were his pride and joy. Their favorite pastime comprised of watching Marvel movies together as well as his favorite OSU football games. He was their biggest fan-whether it was on basketball or tennis courts yelling, cheering, and embarrassing the girls-or giving pep talks about life. He had a great sense of humor. Michelle and Grace have many, many stories, which bring them to tears laughing about their dad. They did not leave his side once he was placed in at-home hospice care and at Hospice of Northwest Ohio's facility, sleeping on the floors and watching him closely. In his sickness, he was not sad for himself, but only for his family. He said he was infinitely grateful to God that it was him with cancer and not his family. Scott loved traveling with his family; his favorite trip was the annual ski trip to Park City, Utah with his family and his niece, Jenny Jeu. The trips will continue, and he will be celebrated. Scott is survived by his wife Dr. Myung Jean (Kay); daughters, Michelle and Grace; his mother Jung Ok; his brothers Steve (Wonhee) and Jim (Susan); mother-in-law, Jung Sook; brother-in-law, Ken Ke; sister-in-law, Sung-Hee (Joseph) Jeu; uncles, aunts and multiple cousins; and beloved nieces and nephews, Hannah Ke, Andrew Ke, Rachel (Steve) Lee, Michael Lee, Jenny (Jake) Lee-Martin, Jessica (Matt) Bielak, and Jenny Jeu. He was preceded in death in recent years by his father Chung Soo Lee, his uncle Heung Soo Ko, and his cousin Perry Sandlin. When he was asked how he would like to be remembered, he replied "I cared about everyone. My only regret is not telling everyone how much I cared about them: my family, friends, and patients." He was reminded that his actions showed how much he loved and cared. His cancer journey was heartbreaking; however, there were tender and heartwarming moments. Scott realized the impact he had on his patients' lives by seeing the impact his doctors had on him. Scott and his family would like to give the most heartfelt thanks to the doctors and hospital staff. He was so tenderly cared for by Dr. David Macari (Oncology), Dr. Jessica Lin (Mass General Hospital Oncology), Dr. Raluca Avram (Radiology), Dr. Lalaine Mattison (Pulmonology), Dr. Steven Rubin (Interventional Radiology), Dr. Mike Neiswander (Family Practice), Dr. Kevin Reinard (Neurosurgery), Dr. Shaila Fernandes (Pathology), the wonderful Promedica nurses and staff members, and the caring staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, who were his guardian angels. Our family wishes to establish a foundation in Scott's honor to support cancer research and to honor all those who had impact on Scott's life. With our deepest gratitude, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A special thanks to Pastor Dan Gildner of Grace Church who met with him when he was hurting and anointed him before he passed. Scott was very much at peace. There will be a visitation at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12:00 p.m. at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Road in Toledo. The celebration will continue at a luncheon at Carranor Hunt & Polo Club in Perrysburg following the service. Everyone is invited.
